In edition 14 of The Spark, we broke down the use of FOOH ads for paid social.

This week, we're taking it a step further and combining FOOH ads with GenAI ✨

Midjourney recently released the 6th version of its AI-powered image generation tool. As part of the new release, we wanted to test its capabilities to generate FOOH ads with the help of green screen elements.

Now, compared to some of the tools discussed in my initial piece on creating FOOH ads, AI-generated banner ads aided by green screens still needs to be tweaked by someone in a design software such as Photoshop. Figma could do the job, but as you'll see with the examples I share, it's not without compromises.

How to create AI-assisted FOOH ads

To be able to replicate the following you'll need access to Midjourney premium.


Step 1: Prompt Midjourney to create the assets

The prompt I used to generate the "astronaut on mars" asset:

Prompt template:

Over the shoulder shot of [your subject] in front of an entirely green computer screen, the screen is filled with a green screen, the whole screen is visible, the reflection off the green screen is [your wanted colour reflection], the [your subject] is on [the environment your subject is in]


Step 2a: Hand over to designer (if possible)

If your designer colleague has access to Photoshop or knows other ways to handle a green screen visual, feel free to share the Midjourney asset you have created and let them do their magic.

If you do not have access to a designer colleague, you can check out step 2b, which is the hacky DIY method in Figma.


Step 2b: Hacky DIY method in Figma

Upload your raw assets into a Figma file, and overlay the green screen with your creative visual (your ad, social post, etc.). To make it more realistic, apply the filters necessary to make the creative visual blend into the Midjourney asset.

Note: The FOOH ads you see for The Spark are all created following step 2b.


Step 3: post/upload your new FOOH creative to your marketing channels

Monitor the results, and evaluate whether or not you see a performance lift compared to your other creatives.
